Also, during the scene where these kills take place, Erin and Zee are fighting, and Felix takes this opportunity to stab Erin but he stabs her in the shoulder. Let me know if it’s possible or if you’ve done it in the comments below. Can you even get a knife to penetrate the hardest part of the body? That spot had me shaking my head. I wasn’t feeling the way Erin killed Zee though.

It was creative and funny and gruesome, so okay. However, I was having such a fun time, I can look the other way on that. I liked the idea of the blender in Felix’s skull but I’m not convinced that can be done. It was jarring and unnecessary and did take me out of the moment for a bit. This part was the screenwriter hitting the audience over the head with a reminder of their financial situation. Erin knows Crispan is an English teacher and she’s finishing her academic career. The thing about his little speech that bugs me is when he reminds her that they’re broke. Crispan did not expect this and starts talking out his ass about how she was not going to be harmed and they were going to get fucking paid, and still could as long as she’s cool about the boyfriend’s brother’s friends trying to kill her.

When cowardly Crispan comes back to verify the murders have taken place (without his help), he is confronted by Erin. I hated the exposition in the climax of the movie. Unless you get aroused by having your life in danger but Crispan doesn’t strike me as that type. The first thing you should ask someone before you sleep next to them is if they can kill you with their bare hands. They have been together long enough for Crispan to want to introduce Erin to his parents (and later he mentions possible engagement, but that might be bullshit) but he doesn’t know anything about how she grew up. You’re Next could have benefitted from more context about Crispan and Erin’s relationship. A great example of this is the final booby trap in the last violent spot. The comedic spots fit within the flow of the narrative and aren’t just shoehorned for the sake of something the screenwriter thought was funny. All of these elements work well with the dark humor in the movie. Clues are revealed so you can determine who is the evil one in the bunch. We are given a roomful of potential suspects, since you know someone in the family is orchestrating the murders. You’re Next waits to reveal the true antagonists to add drama to the movie. The suspense is well done, drawing out tense moments to draw you into how the plot progresses. The trip line at neck level on the front door was especially impressive.
YOURE NEXT MOVIE
There are lots of gorey high spots to scratch your horror movie itch. The violence, suspense, and humor in You’re Next is fantastic. She is an easy character to like and we want to see her fuck up these goat faced assailants. Erin is a likeable, tough character in a situation that could have happened to anyone. Erin beat some brains in and it was glorious. She didn’t just run away or find a guy to protect her. The coolest thing about Erin’s character is that when she was able to gain the upper hand on the attacker, she killed that motherfucker. Half of you still have hundreds of rolls of toilet paper and cans of Spaghettios from the first Covid-19 wave. Being raised by a doomsday nut who wants to ensure his daughter’s survival if anything happens to him is easy to believe. You’re Next gives a reasonable explanation for why Erin is as resourceful as she is. Then, the plot kicks off with crossbow shot velocity: people are killed, antagonists are foreshadowed and established, and Erin shows her resourcefulness and why you should be rooting for her to survive the night. It establishes a location, introduces us to the protagonist Erin (Sharni Vinson), and gets all the characters into the aforementioned location.

It was a refreshing take on the horror genre and showed how a simple inversion can make a movie appealing, fresh, and interesting. The would be killers are then murdered by the final girl. In a clever move, writer Simon Barrett has a group of murders infiltrate the Davison house during a dinner party for reasons to be revealed as the movie unfolds. Horror movies tend to set up a dynamic where there is a killer targeting the protagonist and picking off the protagonist’s idiot friends until the inevitable showdown between hero and villain. The best thing about You’re Next is how it subverts expectations of a regular horror movie.
